Xi’an Cultural District Opens

In December 2024, Xi’an, a city steeped in history and culture, welcomed a transformative addition to its urban landscape—the Xi’an Centre Culture Business District (CCBD). Designed by the renowned Heatherwick Studio, this expansive 155,000-square-meter development seamlessly integrates commerce, culture, and community. The CCBD stands as a testament to innovative architecture that honors tradition while embracing modernity.

A Fusion of Heritage and Modernity

Situated south of Xi’an’s historic center, between the ruins of the Temple of Heaven and the Shaanxi TV Tower, the CCBD occupies a strategic location that bridges the ancient and the contemporary. The district’s design draws inspiration from Xi’an’s rich ceramic heritage, notably the Terracotta Army, incorporating over 100,000 handcrafted ceramic tiles across its facades, columns, and beams. These tiles, developed in collaboration with local artisans, underwent more than 2,000 glaze experiments to achieve their unique finish, creating a tactile and visual connection to the city’s storied past.

The Xi’an Tree: A Vertical Oasis

At the heart of the CCBD stands the Xi’an Tree, a 57-meter-tall vertical park that serves as both a landmark and a communal gathering space. Comprising 56 terraces, the structure offers a journey through diverse biomes reminiscent of those along the ancient Silk Road, from alpine tundra to dry steppes. Visitors can ascend these terraces, experiencing a blend of nature and architecture that provides panoramic views of the district and the broader cityscape.

Design Philosophy: Human-Centered Urbanism

Heatherwick Studio’s approach to the CCBD emphasizes human-scale design and sensory engagement. The district is crafted to offer visual complexity at three scales:

A. City Scale: The skyline features silhouettes inspired by traditional Chinese temple roofs, integrating the development into Xi’an’s urban fabric.

B. Street Scale: Interlocking frames and terraces create dynamic vantage points, fostering exploration and interaction.

C. Human Scale: Materials such as glazed ceramics, hand-carved timber, and soft-edged paving stones invite touch and engagement, enhancing the sensory experience.

This design philosophy aligns with Thomas Heatherwick’s broader vision of creating spaces that prioritize human connection and joy over mere functionality.

Sustainability and Community Integration

Beyond aesthetics, the CCBD is a model of sustainable urban development. The use of locally sourced materials and collaboration with regional artisans not only reduces environmental impact but also supports the local economy. The district’s pedestrian-friendly layout, green spaces, and integration of residential, commercial, and cultural facilities encourage community engagement and reduce reliance on vehicular transport.

Economic and Cultural Impact

The CCBD is poised to become a significant economic driver for Xi’an, attracting businesses, tourists, and residents alike. Its blend of retail spaces, offices, apartments, and cultural venues creates a vibrant ecosystem that caters to diverse needs. Moreover, by celebrating Xi’an’s historical legacy through contemporary design, the district reinforces the city’s identity and fosters cultural pride among its inhabitants.

Conclusion

The Xi’an Centre Culture Business District exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between history and modernity, creating spaces that are both functional and meaningful. Through its innovative architecture, commitment to sustainability, and celebration of cultural heritage, the CCBD sets a new standard for urban development in Xi’an and beyond.
